Dictionary: Slope
The slope shows how steep a straight line is — how much y changes when x increases by 1.
a = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁)
In f(x) = ax + b, a is the slope. Positive a means the line rises, negative a means it falls.
Example: f(x) = 3x + 1 has slope 3 — for each unit increase in x, y increases by 3.
The mathematician does not study mathematics because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it.
— Henri Poincaré (1854–1912)
