Dictionary: Derivative
The derivative f'(x) shows the instantaneous rate of change of a function — how quickly y changes at a point.
f'(x) = lim[h→0] (f(x+h) - f(x)) / h
In practice we use differentiation rules rather than the definition. The derivative is the slope of the tangent line at the point.
Power rule: (xⁿ)' = n·xⁿ⁻¹
The art of doing mathematics consists in finding that special case which contains all the germs of generality.
— David Hilbert (1862–1943)
